Mona, Utah History

Learn some fun fact about Mona, as your potential new hometown.

Mona, Utah, located in Juab County at the foot of Mt. Nebo, was settled in 1852 and originally named Clover Creek. It underwent several name changes—including Willow Creek and Starr—before becoming known as Mona, growing from a ranching settlement into a small, agricultural community that is now famous for its nearby lavender farms and Burraston Ponds. [1, 2, 3]

Early Settlement and Names

  • 1852: Settled as Clover Creek, residents lived in dugouts near a creek surrounded by wild clover.
  • Abandonment: Due to conflicts with local Native American tribes (the Walker War), the settlement was abandoned around 1853-1854, with residents moving to nearby Nephi for safety.
  • Resettlement: Settlers returned in 1860, and later moved the town further east to its current location on the advice of LDS President Brigham Young.
  • Name Origin: The name “Mona” was eventually chosen, believed by historians to be suggested by a visitor from the British Isles, although legends claim it is an Indian word for “beautiful” or a contraction of “Madonna”. [2, 4, 5, 6]

Community Development

  • Farming Focus: Historically, Mona was a quiet farming town focused on cattle, alfalfa, and wheat.
  • Water Usage: The town was involved in a long-standing water dispute with nearby Goshen in the 1870s over usage from local creeks.
  • The “Burl Ives Incident”: In the 1930s, singer Burl Ives was briefly jailed in Mona for singing “Foggy Foggy Dew,” which authorities at the time deemed inappropriate.
  • City Status: Although it has maintained a small-town atmosphere, the population was 850 in 2000, allowing it to officially incorporate as a city in 2001.
  • Growth: The population has grown significantly, reaching over 2,000 residents as of 2026. [2, 5, 6, 7, 8]

LeeRen is truly a precision man. Vernal City loves, loves, .loves his blue prints. They told us they had never seen anyone so precise in drawing house plans. No need to red line. He has it down. And he builds that way as well. We love the house he built for us in our senior years: no stairs, wide hall ways, wide door ways, step in shower, as well as many other features. If you want it done right, call LeeRen!

LeeRen helped us with a total gut job reno of our kitchen and mudroom. … He was quick to respond to every ignorant question I had. He would come and show me everything. He made sure we had a final product we are thrilled with at a price point we are also very happy with. He was remarkably on time and his subs were responsive and did a great job. There was one small detail in the stucco that I wasn’t happy with and the sub was back the very next day and fixed it perfectly. I couldn’t recommend him enough. Thank you LeeRen.

PHD Frequently Asked Questions

Read the full FAQJust Ask Us
  • Is it less expensive to buy a home or build new?

In our experience, it is less expensive to build a new home than to purchase an existing home. Sometimes a production builder can sell a newly built home for less, but the lack of QUALITY will be evident by promising work QUANTITY to their sub-contractors.

  • I am researching custom home builders, what makes your company different?

We at Precision Homes & Design value quality and durability. To ensure this, we do things other builders don’t. Some of these are: We compact back-fill of dirt to reduce settling problems; We use more concrete reinforcing steel than the standard; We use brass plumbing fittings instead of plastic; We use screws instead of nails to fasten floor decking to joists to better eliminate possible floor squeaks.

  • Will a custom-designed, custom-built home be built with a higher standard of quality than those built by production builders?

With Precision Homes & Design the answer is … Absolutely! We take pride in what we build and want our work to last for many decades with as few issues as possible.

  • How long does it take to build a home?

A custom home typically takes about 6-8 months to build. Supply chain issues lately have been a headache for everyone, which the home-building industry has felt as well.

  • What are the downsides to a custom Home?

Many decisions have to be made, but you get your vision of a home.
