Hello and welcome to Elk Ridge.
Nestled along the foothills between Salem and Payson, Elk Ridge is a peaceful, upscale residential community known for its sweeping valley views, quiet streets, and strong connection to nature. With its elevated position along the Wasatch Range, Elk Ridge offers stunning sunrise and sunset vistas, wildlife sightings, and a serene environment ideal for families and professionals seeking privacy and tranquility.
Elk Ridge has grown steadily while preserving its low‑density character. Homes are well-spaced, neighborhoods are beautifully maintained, and the city places an emphasis on safe, family-friendly living. Because of its hillside geography, many homes enjoy panoramic views over Utah Valley and access to outdoor recreation just minutes from the front door. Residents often choose Elk Ridge for its secluded feel while still being only a short drive from shopping, dining, and medical services in Salem, Spanish Fork, and Payson.
For those considering building a custom home in Elk Ridge, Precision Homes & Design is uniquely equipped to help. Because the city features sloped lots, view-heavy parcels, and architectural diversity, Precision Homes & Design specializes in designing homes that maximize elevation advantages, natural light, and scenic views. Whether you’re looking for a luxury foothill home, a modern mountain-inspired build, or a family-focused layout with room to grow, they can create a custom design that fits both the terrain and lifestyle Elk Ridge offers.

Elk Ridge, Utah, located in Utah County, began as the Goosenest Ranch (https://historytogo.utah.gov/elk-ridge/) before being developed into the Salem Hills subdivision in the early 1970s. It incorporated as a town in 1976 with a population of 100, officially changing its name to Elk Ridge in 1978 to reflect local wildlife and avoid confusion with neighboring Salem. [1, 2]
Key Historical Details:
- Original Land: The area was previously known as the Goosenest Ranch, which was homesteaded by James Fayette Shuler.
- Development: Developer Jim Winterton and his son purchased the land from Shuler’s heirs, developing it into the “Salem Hills” subdivision.
- Incorporation: The town was officially incorporated on December 22, 1976.
- Name Change: In 1978, the name was changed from Salem Hills to Elk Ridge due to the frequent presence of elk on the hillsides and to distinguish it from the nearby city of Salem.
- Growth: The first home in the development was completed in 1973, marking the beginning of the residential community. [1, 2]
Note: This refers to the city of Elk Ridge in Utah County (near Payson/Salem), not to be confused with the geological Elk Ridge region in San Juan County near Bears Ears. [1, 3, 4, 5]

PHD Frequently Asked Questions
We realize that not every question can be answered in a FAQ. If you have additional questions, please use our contact page to ask us anything about Custom Home Design and Build. We actually like questions.
Read the full FAQJust Ask UsIs it less expensive to buy a home or build new?
In our experience, it is less expensive to build a new home than to purchase an existing home. Sometimes a production builder can sell a newly built home for less, but the lack of QUALITY will be evident by promising work QUANTITY to their sub-contractors.
I am researching custom home builders, what makes your company different?
We at Precision Homes & Design value quality and durability. To ensure this, we do things other builders don’t. Some of these are: We compact back-fill of dirt to reduce settling problems; We use more concrete reinforcing steel than the standard; We use brass plumbing fittings instead of plastic; We use screws instead of nails to fasten floor decking to joists to better eliminate possible floor squeaks.
Will a custom-designed, custom-built home be built with a higher standard of quality than those built by production builders?
With Precision Homes & Design the answer is … Absolutely! We take pride in what we build and want our work to last for many decades with as few issues as possible.
How long does it take to build a home?
A custom home typically takes about 6-8 months to build. Supply chain issues lately have been a headache for everyone, which the home-building industry has felt as well.
What are the downsides to a custom Home?
Many decisions have to be made, but you get your vision of a home.
