FAQ

We realise that not every question can be answered in a FAQ. If you have additional questions, use our contact page to ask us anything about Custom Home Design and Build.
We actually like questions.

Q: Is it less expensive to buy a home or build new?

A: In our experience, it is less expensive to build a new home than to purchase an existing home. Sometimes a production builder can sell a newly built home for less, but the lack of quality will be evident, as they pay their sub-contractors a super-low price by promising quantity.

Q: I am researching custom home builders, what makes your company different?

A: We at Precision Homes & Design value quality and durability. To ensure this, we do things other builders don’t. Some of these are: We compact back-fill of dirt to reduce settling problems; We use more concrete reinforcing steel than the standard; We use brass plumbing fittings instead of plastic; We use screws instead of nails to fasten floor decking to joists to better eliminate possible floor squeaks.

Q: Will a custom-designed, custom-built home be built with a higher standard of quality than those built by production builders?

A: With Precision Homes & Design the answer is…Absolutely! We take pride in what we build and want our work to last for decades with as few issues as possible.

Q: Is there a better heating method than a forced-air furnace?

A: Absolutely! Meet Hydronic Heating. This is a system that heats water and circulates it in the floor which creates the MOST comfortable heating system. Forced air furnaces heat quickly as air is easy to heat, but then the heat is lost just as quickly. Stable heat is obtained when things with mass are heated which hold the heat for much longer and radiate the heat. Walking on a warm floor in winter is the best!

Q: How long does it take to build a home?

A: A custom home typically takes about 6-8 months to build. Supply chain issues lately have been a headache for everyone, which the home-building industry has felt as well.

Q: Do I have to have lots of steps from my garage into the house?

A: No. Unless the building lot has lots of elevation change, steps are not necessary. Steps are usually created by placing the basement half-way out of the ground which raises the main floor. There are other design options to avoid or reduce steps from the garage into the home.

Q: Can I have a home built with preparedness things in mind?

A: Yes! We specialize in large pantries, food storage rooms, and water storage. We also promote back-up electrical systems.

Q: Is it possible to build a home with a secret room?

A: Yes. We have designed and built homes with many special room types. Secret rooms with hidden entry; Salons, large offices/libraries; firearm safety rooms; and even shooting ranges. We love to design and build to fit your needs.

Q: Does the outside of my home have to look like all the other new houses being built?

A: No. Exterior materials and colors can be selected based on what you want. Many trends and styles we see today can look very nice, but will date the house in a few years. However, we design and build what you want…so you get what you want.

Q: Can my home be built to eliminate the drumming noise while walking around?

A: Yes. The drumming noise comes from a wood floor system. Several options are available to eliminate this—the best of which works super well with the hydronic heating system.

Q: I found a building lot, Can I use Precision Homes & Design to build my custom home?

A: Many subdivisions sell building lots and allow the buyer to bring their own builder. Sometimes a builder develops a subdivision and requires that they be the builder.

Q: Will you build a home from house plans that someone else created?

A: Yes. We can build a home from plans that other designers have created. The quality of house plans we see range from good, accurate plans to terrible. In our experience, plans that are well prepared save money in the long run by eliminating building errors during construction.

Q: I’m looking to have a custom home designed. Do I need to use an architect or can I use a draftsman?

A: You can use either, but a draftsman will be much less expensive. Architects generally prefer commercial projects where they can make much more money. Selecting a good draftsman is important to make sure the plans will be of good quality. The best option is to have a builder/designer like Precision Homes & Design create the plans because we know exactly what should be on the plans.

Q: What locations are you available to build custom homes in?

A: Mapleton, Springville, Provo, Orem, Spanish Fork, Salem, Payson, Genola, Santaquin, Mona, Nephi, Lehi, Vineyard, Woodland Hills, Elk Ridge, Benjamin, Lake Shore, Palmyra, Hobble Creek, Herriman, Bluffdale, American Fork, Highland, Alpine, Cedar Hills, Lindon, Heber City, Park City, and Midway.
